Hundreds of happy patients have been treated in the clinic of Dr. Mehtap ERTÜRK, a specialist in obesity treatment.
Obesity is one of the serious diseases of the modern age, which is frequently seen in developed and developing countries. Obesity should be considered as a serious disease due to it brings many short or long-term fatal diseases with it, if it is not treated.
According to the research of the World Health Organization, obesity has increased 3 times in the last 40 years all over the world. It was determined that 1.9 billion adult people in the world are overweight and 650 million of them are obese in 2016.
Obesity can generally be defined as an excessive increase fat ratio in the body compared to other components of the body, which will affect the health. Excessive amount of fat affects the body hormones and causes increase the secretion of some hormones that make the body want to eat more. It is like a vicious circle.
Obesity treatments can be divided into surgical and non-surgical treatments. Gastric balloon, one of the non-surgical treatments, is being applied increasingly nowadays. Surgical treatments are called as Bariatric Surgeries such as sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, and applied worldwide with proven effectiveness and reliability.
Gastric sleeve surgery is a surgical procedure in which approximately 80% of the stomach is removed and 150-200 cc of stomach tissue is left behind. The stomach is cut from the points where it meets the esophagus and duodenum and turned into a tube. Since the volume of the stomach is reduced and the dome-shaped “fundus” part, in which Ghrelin, known as the hunger hormone is secreted, is removed, patients lose weight easily in the postoperative period without feeling hungry.
The operation is performed with the laparoscopic method and the duration is 1 – 1.5 hours.
The two most important complications are the leakage and bleeding from the cut line due to the openings in the suture line in the remaining stomach section. So it is really important to use top quality equipments for operation.
The biggest reason for bleeding or leakage is the poor quality of the staplers used during the removal of the stomach section. We use the Covidien Endo GIA TRI STAPLE™ product in our operations without sacrificing quality.
Gastric Bypass surgery is one of the most common surgical methods used in the treatment of obesity.
This surgery, called Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass, is performed by cutting the stomach leaving a small part just after the esophagus and creating a small stomach, and then bypassing and connecting a part of the small intestine to the formed stomach. Thus, both the volume of the stomach is restricted and the absorption is also restricted by shortening the intestine.
This surgery is widely used in general. However, the surgery is more complicated than sleeve gastrectomy surgery. Complications that may occur after surgery are 2 times more. It has been observed that there is no significant difference in excessive weight loss rates when compared to Sleeve Gastroctemy (Gastric Sleeve) surgery. However, RYGB surgery is effective in the treatment of diseases associated with obesity.
Gastric balloon is made of silicone or polyurethane material, placed in the stomach as deflated and then inflated with sterile liquid. It is used for the obesity treatments. Balloon application is not a surgical operations, but some gastric balloons are placed and removed by endoscopy under anesthesia, depending on the type of balloon.
The mechanism of the gastric balloon is to create a constant feeling of fullness by occupying space in the stomach, thus enabling the patient to lose weight with less food consumption at each meal.
When we consider obesity as a common disease of the modern age, gastric balloon applications are a frequently preferred curing method in the treatment of overweight and obesity, especially by individuals who are inconvenient to receive anesthesia or who do not want a surgical procedure.
By following the developments in gastric balloon, we use the latest technology balloons and effective tracking systems together.
She started her general surgery specialization at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital in 2007 and worked mainly in oncological surgery and breast diseases clinic.
In 2013, she presented her thesis titled “The role of Galectin-3 as a biomarker in colon cancer” and received her specialty in general surgery in 2015. After performing all the surgeries in her field, she showed interest in the field of bariatric surgery due to the increasing obesity in recent years.
After completing her compulsory service in Silopi district of Şırnak between 2013 and 2015, she returned to Istanbul and worked at Esenler Medipol University Hospital for 1 year in 2015, and then started to work at Acıbadem Beylikdüzü Medical Center in 2016.
Ertürk, who started to work at Private Reyap Istanbul Hospital in 2017, received the title of Assistant Professor from Rumeli University in the same year.
