The gastric balloon occupies space in the stomach, reducing the stomach volume and, due to its position, reduces the secretion of the hunger hormone Ghrelin to the minimum level. Thus, it facilitates compliance with the diet and provides weight loss. A healthy weight loss is achieved with a healthy nutrition plan that is rich in protein and in a balanced distribution of carbohydrates and fats, accompanied by a dietitian. Thus, lean body weight is preserved and weight loss from fat occurs. The most important gain during the process is to change the existing malnutrition behaviors. It is to gain healthy and sustainable habits after the balloon.
Diet in the gastric balloon takes place gradually. Liquid nutrition is provided for the first 3 days after the operation. For the next 3 days, mashed foods are consumed. At the end of the six days, the transition to solid nutrition is made according to the tolerance status of the person.
Liquid nutrition: At this stage, all foods should be liquid and grain-free. Since stomach problems will be experienced for a few days after the operation, care should be taken that these liquids are at room temperature. Very cold and very hot liquids should not be consumed. In addition, liquids should be consumed slowly and in sip.
Sample foods; grain-free broth/chicken stock soup, lactose-free milk, ayran, kefir, unsweetened grain-free compote, some soups.
Puree nutrition: At this stage, foods should be consumed by mashing with a fork or by blender. For example; Yogurt, mashed cheese and eggs, blenderized meat/chicken/fish, blenderized vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage are not recommended as they contain gas-forming elements).
Solid nutrition: In solid nutrition, a healthy and balanced nutrition plan is created according to the energy needs of people. The most important point at this stage is the solid-liquid separation. Drinking liquids with food should be avoided. If a liquid food is to be consumed, it should be consumed 30 minutes before or after meals. The reason for this is that when solid foods and liquids are taken at the same time, the volume of food increases in the stomach and creates pressure on the balloon.
– All foods that increase stomach acidity; All acidic beverages, alcohol, fruits with high acidity (such as orange, grapefruit, lemon, and caffeine is not desired in the first week), sharp and sour-sweet fruits (such as pomegranate, plum), gas-causing foods (such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage), calorie Foods that are high and have no nutritional value, cooked with unhealthy cooking methods (fried and roasted) should not be included in the diet.
– Liquids should be taken in small sips, meals should be chewed thoroughly and eating should be stopped as soon as satiety is felt. Foods should be consumed in an upright position and should not be left late. Food intake should be stopped 2-3 hours before going to bed.
– Urine should be followed for water consumption. Urine color should be light yellow. If it is dark yellow, water consumption should be increased.
– After the gastric balloon application, this process should be continued in the company of a nutritionist / dietitian in order for weight loss to be healthy and in the best way.
